Hitchhiking

Read about our adventures on the road - the exhilaration of being picked up for the first time hitchhiking before we even wrote the sign, being stuffed in the boot of a car, entertaining Swiss children in France, being dropped off in the freezing middle of nowhere on a mountain and the struggles of communicating without knowing the local language. We met incredible people from every imaginable demographic who spared their time to help us on our journey and we are eternally grateful!

El Caminito Del Rey: The once most dangerous hike in the world

It’s been a while since we managed to hitch a ride and today’s not going to be our day. The plan is to hitch from Granada to El Chorro and then tomorrow we can hike in the infamous El Caminito Del Rey canyon. Before swiftly moving on to Ronda, our final destination in Europe! The […]

Benagil to Faro: All along the Algarve

It was absolute ordeal getting to the Algarve & Benagil, much more complicated than many other trips we’ve recently made. Like when we hitchhiked all the way across Switzerland on a sightseeing tour. The Portuguese are kind of adverse to the idea of Hitchhiking. Still, we do manage to catch one ride, so all is […]

Wild and without a campground: Lisbon to Benagil

Leaving Lisbon for the Algarve seems to be a bit of a problem. We have plans to get to nearby Benagil caves and beach and wild camp somewhere on the beach or cliffs. Before we can even consider that though we need to get south. Train and Bus are out of our budget. We toy […]

Wild and without enough time: Catalonia to Portugal

And so begins one of the longest journeys of our European hitchhiking travels. We have one more brief stop in Catalonia and then we need to get to Portugal, for we have lost a lot of time. Originally we had planned to hitchhike through northern Spain to Portugal and down to Porto. We have come […]

Nine wild rides to the Pyrenees

From the Alps to the French Riviera and back to the mountains. This time the Pyrenees. We’ve got a long way to go. For now Caroline is feeling ill, so we’ve decided to take a break from camping and rest in a hotel to recover. We need to be fit and healthy where we are […]

Wild and without an art education: Arles & van Gogh

Not exactly unhappy to leave the campsite in Manosque, we get up considerably early (for us anyway) and make our way to town to get a ride from there. Today we finally want to get to the seaside! (with a quick stop in Arles). I’m dreaming about sandy beaches and wild horses in the Camargue. […]

Annecy: lakes, bikes, canals and catastrophes

It’s late and dark, we arrive at our Couchsurfing host’s place hours later than expected. Our journey to Annecy was a bit of a disaster. We’ve kept them updated but we still feel really uncomfortable for keeping them up so late. Yann and Cecile are super friendly though and make us a tea as soon […]

Feel the Bern

Our first experience of Bern is sitting on a roof top bar over the city watching the sun burning in to the night. The snow capped Alps in an infinite line across the horizon. We drink a beer with our new Couchsurfing host Sandro. Bern is already beautiful and we are happy to be here, […]

Wild and without money: Hiking Kleine Scheidegg

Another day, another adventure. Yesterday we had a chill day. After running all the way down from the top of Niesen, our legs were completely jelly. We spent the whole day lazing around, waddling like penguins to the toilet and planning today. Well, Caroline did most of the planning. She has selected a hike starting […]

Wild and without a conscience: Interlaken & Niesenbahn

After a short morning explore of Lucerne, it’s time to leave. We’re heading to Interlaken, one of the most famous destinations in Switzerland. It’s nestled in the mountains between two huge gorgeous lakes and we are super excited! In particular we are looking forward to riding on the Niesenbahn funicular. This ride should be a […]

A hitchhiker’s dream: Road tripping through Switzerland

It’s early morning, fog is hanging over the forests and frost covers the ground beneath us. Once again, we’re standing by the side of a road, waiting for some kindhearted person to take us to, well, pretty much anywhere this time! We’re in Filisur, a tiny village on the Glacier Express line in the south-east […]
